Thousands of years ago our ancestors created maps to try to figure out where they fitted into the world. Early maps were inaccurate but as time went by, technology and mathematical calculations improved to the point where we have highly accurate world maps these days. Thanks to technology, we can now use GPS (global positioning system) on our phones or in our cars to find our way. Easy-peasy. But let’s take a look at where it all started.
The oldest map we know of was found in current day Czech Republic and depicted the mountain, river, valleys and routes around what’s now the town of Pavlov. This “map” – though it hardly looks like one – was carved into the tusk of a mammoth, a prehistoric elephant. It was made about 27 000 years ago!
