1. Dough Mix the flour, salt, spices, naartjie zest, sugar and yeast in a large mixing bowl and make a well in the middle.
2. Whisk the butter, milk and egg together well, then pour into the middle of the dry ingredients. Add half the lukewarm water and use a fork to mix until a dough begins to form. Continue mixing, adding more of the water as needed to form a sticky dough.
3. Turn the dough out on a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic. Shape into a ball, transfer to a bowl, cover the bowl and leave in a warm place to rise for about an hour or until doubled in volume.
