This recipe is a variation on the recipe for tomato-and-onion smoor that belonged to Reuben’s mom, Sylvia. Sylvia loved spices, especially garam masala, which she’d even sprinkle over salad. It provides depth of flavour without being too hot.
Preheat the oven to 180°C.
1. Drain the peas or lentils and cook in water until soft but not mushy. Season with salt just before done. Drain and set aside.
