1. Heat some butter or oil in a pan on the fire and fry the onion and mushrooms until they’re soft and golden brown. Add the garlic and pepper and fry for another minute.
2. Build the braaibroodjies: spread butter or olive oil on one side of each slice of bread (these sides will be facing outward in the assembled braaibroodjie).
Pack half of these slices buttered sides down and spread cream cheese on all the slices. Then add a layer of the mushroom mixture and cheese. Close the braaibroodjies with the remaining slices of bread, buttered sides facing upward.
