In South Africa, the average age at which men and women divorce is 45 and 41 respectively. Most divorces (55,9%) also happen when couples have children under the age of 18 and have major financial responsibilities, such as home and car loans and school fees.

Here are four tips to help give you control of your finances if you’re getting divorced.

Don’t rush to the closest and toughest lawyer to nail your spouse. First consider your options. Mediation, also called uncontested divorce, is usually less expensive and faster than litigation.
