This might just be the cutest thief in the world. Sisu the homeless hound has become the latest internet sensation after repeatedly trotting into a shop and stealing a stuffed unicorn.
The pooch was so enchanted by a purple unicorn that he’d snatch the toy every chance he got. Sisu fascinated employees and shoppers in a Dollar General store in Kenansville in the US state of North California when it kept entering the premises, dashing straight past the dog food and making a beeline for the plush toy in the toy aisle.
Sisu’s “trespassing” happened so frequently animal control officers were eventually called in. “He went straight for the unicorn, the same one every time,” says Joe Newburn, a supervisor at Duplin County Animal Services. Sisu had a sneaky system worked out – each time a customer exited and the door opened, he’d run in and grab the toy. “Finally, they had to lock the door and called us,” Joe says.
Samantha Lane, the animal services officer who responded to the call, was so taken with Sisu’s love for the $10 (R150) unicorn she bought it before taking him to the Duplin County Animal Services shelter in Kenansville.
“The only thing we can think is that he came from a home where he had a similar stuffed animal or kids in the home did,” she says.
Workers at the animal shelter named the stray Sisu after the dragon cartoon character in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon. They also shared a picture of the pup and his unicorn bestie on Facebook, appealing for someone to adopt him.
“This is what happens when animal control [gets] called to lock you up for your [breaking and entering] and larceny, but the officer purchases your item for you and brings it in with you,” they captioned the snap.
Sisu and his unicorn have been inseparable ever since he was rescued – now the adorable pooch and his stuffed animal will be moving to their forever home. Sisu and his BFF were adopted and will soon have an entire collection of purple unicorns to choose from.
Dollar General spokesperson Crystal Luce says the store plans to donate several of the toys to his adoptive family as well as pet food to Duplin County Animal Services for their help in finding the dog and his unicorn a home.
“We are glad to see Sisu is happy with his new toy.”
Talk about a dog’s life.
