What do Miley Cyrus and the Dalai Lama have in common? Not much, you might say, apart from the fact they live on the same planet.

One is a raunchy pop singer with a penchant for sticking out her tongue and baring her butt, the other is – well, the Dalai Lama. But both have a fondness for footwear that is going nowhere fast: Dr Martens, a sturdy old working boot of a shoe that has come a long way since its less-than-auspicious beginnings.

So far, in fact, it recently had its debut on the London Stock Exchange, listing at £3,70 (R75,85) a share – and trading went so crazy the company soon had a valuation of £3,7 billion (R75,85bn) after investor demand saw the listing eight times oversubscribed. Which, in layman’s language, means this is a company to invest in.
