Imagine what it must be like for Elon Musk to lie in bed at night and know that his net worth is larger than the annual GDP of South Africa, the country of his birth. Yes, the Pretoria-born tech mogul really is wealthier than the entire country!

Elon’s bank balance was bolstered after the price of shares of his electric car company Tesla surged to $1 208 (R18 120) a share. The 50-year-old owns a 20% stake in Tesla, which helped him surpass Jeff Bezos as the richest person on the planet and the first to be worth more than $300 billion (R5 025bn).
