Their twinkling toes are pointed in shiny silver shoes, rustling pom-poms shimmer in their hands and smiles stretch across their faces – this band of cheery cheerleaders are ready to practise. 

But this is no giggling group of teen-age girls. To get to groove with this glamorous group of razzle-dazzlers, you need to be 55 or older. 

They’re known as Japan Pom Pom, a Tokyo-based team of senior cheerleaders whose current members range in age from 60 and 89. They’ve made it their goal to break stereotypes when it comes to ageing in a country that holds strict views on the type of lives senior citizens should lead and how older women should behave.
