Can true love help you live longer? This couple from Ecuador certainly show there might be some truth in that theory.

With a combined age of 214 years and 358 days, Julio (110) and Waldramina (104) have been recognised as the world’s oldest married couple by Guinness World Records.

Although Guinness no longer keeps track of lengthy marriages, it acknowledges that the adorable couple, who have been married for 79 years, have the “highest combined age of a married couple”.

After seven years of friendship, Julio and Waldramina, tied the knot in 1941. Because their family didn’t approve of their union, they had to be content with a small ceremony attended only be friends and their godparents.

Fortunately, the pair, who are still in good health, were able to bring their relatives together over the years even though they didn’t get along at first.

“It was not easy because our relatives did not have a good relationship, but with time and patience we were able to unite them and we became an example and the best reference for the younger generations,” the married couple said in a statement released to the media.

The couple went on to have five children, who all obtained university degrees, and have a family of 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

“Family unity under the rules of love, mutual respect, honest work, and proper education based on family values are the keys to healthy coexistence,” the pair said in their statement.

One of the couple’s daughters, Aura, says the pandemic has prevented them from having family get-togethers – something that has had an impact on the pair's mental health.

“My parents need family contact,” she says.

As for what the pair enjoy doing, Aura reveals that they love going to the cinema, gardening and having dinners with loved ones. Julio also enjoys watching his favourite shows on television and drinking milk, while Waldramina reads the newspaper every day and can’t resist sweet treats.

As for the pairs advice to younger couples. “ Speak ... the truth. Do not lie, because lies can lose the world,” Waldramina says.

The previous record for the oldest married couple was held by Charlotte and John Henderson from Texas in the US, who have a combined age of 212 years and 52 days.
