The joy of a wallowing hippo, the savagery of a lion hunt, the tenderness of a giraffe’s love for her newborn and the touching bond of a man and a pangolin - all this and more are captured in the winning images of the 2021 Africa Geographic Photographer of the Year competition.

The overall winner was this dramatic image taken by Hannes Lochner in Botswana's Chobe National Park. Called Fly in the Eye, it's of an ageing male lion expressing his irritation with a playful young cub - and with perfect timing the shutter clicked as a fly passed over the big cat's eye.
