The couple were pillars of the small coastal community on the outskirts of Cape Town.

Both were active in the church and whenever new members were welcomed into the congregation, Jaco Cloete, handsome and charming, would be on stage handing out Bibles. 

His wife Monique, well-groomed and attractive with gleaming dark hair and a sparkling smile, was a deacon and youth leader and would make the announcements before services.
