It’s as South African as braaivleis, rugby and sunny skies: an 89km stretch of road winding between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, where for decades scenes of agony, ecstasy, courage and perseverance have played out.
And this year the Comrades Marathon, that ultimate test of endurance, is celebrating its 100th birthday. Thousands of runners from around the world would have loved nothing more than to line up at the start on race day on 13 June – but as this is a time of global disease and social distancing, there will be no pounding the tarmac through the KZN hills this year.
