He heaved a sigh of relief when the judge handed down his verdict. The man he’d spent years trying to bring to book – for torturing and harassing him – was finally being ordered to pay for his actions.

South African businessman Daniel Janse van Rensburg was recently awarded R39 million in damages by the Western Cape High Court after suing Equatorial Guinea’s vice-president, Teodoro Obiang Mangue.

Obiang is also a rap music entrepreneur, an international playboy and the favourite son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who, after 42 years in charge, is the world’s longest serving leader.
