An eerie silence hangs over the family home where once the sounds of children would fill every room.

No one can laugh anymore, Ayanda Magu­dulela says. Her two little boys have both been stunned into silence by the harrowing death of their big sister and all Ayanda can do is to keep going every day for the sake of her sons, Owami (9) and Joshua (6).

Her firstborn, Gugulethu, recently took her own life and Ayanda is crippled by grief. “She was my only daughter,” she says. “I never thought I’d outlive my child.”
