She says the words softly. “I’m sorry. I’m just so sorry.”

Jolandi Venter is sitting in the principal’s office at the preprimary school in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, soft blue makeup framing her sad eyes. 

The 37-year-old has been a preschool teacher for 10 years. She loves and understands children and knows how to care for them, she says.
