This toy pom nearly drowned after falling in the pool at his Johannesburg home. Luckily, his four-legged sibling came to his rescue.
Melissa (27) and Byron Thanarayen (34) from Boksburg recently took to social media to share a harrowing video of their 14-year-old pooch, Chucky, nearly drowning after falling in the pool.
“Before you start judging . . . we are getting the pool covered! It broke our hearts to see this happen when we looked at the security footage,” Byron captioned his post on Facebook, which has since gone viral.
In the video, Chucky can be seen helplessly paddling around the pool until seven-year-old staffie Jessie realises the pom is in trouble and tries to grab her pal from the edge of the pool.

After 34 minutes of trying to get Chucky out, Jessie finally manages to rescue him.
“It was such a horrible incident but at the same time so amazing how Jessie just became the hero,” Melissa tells YOU.
At the time of the incident, Melissa and her husband, who owns a video production company, were in Pretoria for a few hours to attend two appointments. When the pair returned home that evening, Melissa noticed something strange about Chucky, who she’s had since the age of 15.
“As we entered our home, I noticed Chucky’s head was wet, which I found weird.
“I thought maybe he rolled around in the shower or maybe he was playing with the water bowl which was also unlikely because it’s not something he does,” she says.
Melissa, a marketer, then checked her security cameras and was shocked at what she saw.
“I was crying and I couldn’t finish watching the tape. Even though I knew he was okay, just seeing him struggle his bum off to get out was terrible,” she says.
The couple are overjoyed that Jessie, who is a rescue dog, managed to save Chucky.
“Jessie goes from the rescue dog to the dog who rescued,” Melissa says. “It’s just so freaking amazing because she doesn’t like the water, yet she kept on running around to every side as Chucky was swimming circles. My parents also said Chucky deserves a medal for keeping afloat for so long.”
Chucky is fine now, Melissa says. “He’s happy, he’s playing with his little ropes and going crazy.”
Melissa and Byron, who have been married for two years, bought Jessie the biggest bone they could find as a reward.
“This week we’re going to the SPCA because they also want to award Jesse for being a hero. She showed us a side of her we didn’t know she had.”
