It’s a picture from a seemingly care-free childhood: a little girl posing with two smiling adults – but she can’t look at it without a shiver going down her spine. 

“Look at his hand on my shoulder,” Natanya Pienaar says. “He was grooming me.” 

She’s talking about Hermanus “Manie” Senekal (78), former owner of the Byekorf Crèche in Balfour, Mpumalanga. The other adult in the picture is Manie’s late wife, Marie, who ran the crèche.
