Boet Vermaak and his wife, Willa, had been happily married for 60 years when they contracted Covid-19 and died within days of each other.

“When my father died, my mother lost her will [to carry on],” their son, Peet, tells us. “She wanted to be with him and you can understand that.”

Boet (82) and Willa (79) lived in the Millennium Park retirement village in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, and because of its strict adherence to lockdown regulations they hadn’t seen family or friends in five months.
