For years they’d yearned for a child and at last it seemed their dreams were coming true. A pregnant woman wanted to give her baby up for adoption and they entrusted the process to a social worker with her own private adoption agency.
They transferred money to her and started preparing for the baby’s arrival – but then the awful news came: the baby had been stillborn. And the traumatised couples were left with nothing but unanswered questions and less money in their bank accounts.
This appears to be the reality for several South African couples – and in all these cases there’s one common denominator: Letitia van den Berg from Pretoria, who calls herself an adoption specialist.
