Chores and exercise – two things that don’t exactly make many of us jump for joy. But imagine being able to combine the two and save water and electricity at the same time.

It’s an idea so smart it won Cape Town innovator Kai Goodall a prize in a prestigious international competition. His revolutionary washing machine, Pedal n Spin, can transform lives, he says. For people who don’t have electricity and access to running water, it could make life much easier.

The University of Cape Town engineering student created a washing machine that’s driven by pedals. The idea is you pedal as if on a bike, which generates the energy the device requires to wash the load of laundry.
