There was widespread celebration in January when South Africans reeling from the devastating second wave of Covid-19 finally had a glimmer of hope to cling to.

The country had secured 1,5 million doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine and maybe, just maybe we could start to see the light at the end of a very dark tunnel.

Then came the crushing disappointment: the jabs weren’t effective against mild and moderate disease caused by the rampant new variant of the disease.
