He'd wanted nothing more than to welcome the love of his life with open arms after her plane landed at Cape Town International Airport. After all, they hadn’t just been separated by the pandemic but by decades and continents – and he couldn’t wait for their new life to start.

But in the time of Covid-19 there are no warm welcomes in the arrivals halls of airports – instead, tenderness and excitement have been replaced by masked officials and ubiquitous bottles of hand sanitiser.

So Rouvanne van den Berg had to wait a little longer to be reunited with the woman who stole his heart more than 20 years ago.
