Memories of the terrible Table Mountain fire last month still loom large – a harrowing event that destroyed several buildings the University of Cape Town’s campus and saw more than 4 000 students evacuated from residences.
As lectures resume and the clean-up operation gets underway, a video is doing the rounds of how young student marshals at the Fuller Hall and Smuts Hall residences braved the blaze to save the buildings.

In a now-viral video compiled by Siya Ntuntwana, one of the marshals, students can be seen dousing flames as they crept up the ivy clinging to the res’ walls, hosing down trees and fighting through thick smoke inside the buildings to get at the fire.
“Not all heroes wear capes. Beyond the call of duty,” Smuts Hall’s Instagram page captioned the video.
“We pay tribute to these individuals who went beyond what is expected of them. It must be noted that the only training they received was through a Microsoft Teams meeting, yet they still put their lives in danger fighting fires at Smuts Hall and Fuller Hall residence.”
The marshal team included Kealeboga Keretetse, Tafara M'kombe and volunteers Kalaba Chibale, Dean Gibson and Brandon Badenhorst.
