He needed to share with Eskom his unhappiness about the load shedding situation, says David Scott of Cape Town electropop band The Kiffness.

“Guess who is back, back again? Shedding’s back, tell a friend,” David sings in a music video posted to Facebook to the tune of rapper Eminem’s Without Me. The video has had more than 12 000 views.

“No reaction from Eskom,” David reveals. “They don’t have social media, just like they don’t have electricity.”

He says his decision to make the video was prompted by the saying, “Take your broken heart and turn it into art.” He adds, “In this case, it was more like ‘take your broken electricity and turn it into free publicity’.”

And what does he do during load shedding? “Well, just after the lights went out after making this video, I sat in my studio in the dark and ate a slab of chocolate while pondering my existence. Good times.”
