Down the timeline: seven Instagram posts that defined the decade

Instagram has grown to a reach of one billion users since its birth in 2010. We take a trip down memory lane to look at some of the social media platform’s winning pictures and people from this decade.

  1. The very first picture on Instagram

Before Instagram’s launch, cats ruled the internet but the app’s co-founder changed that with his test upload of man’s best friend. According to The Guardian, there’ve been more than 97 million photos hashtagged  #dogs on the site.

  1. The most-romantic picture

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West nab this one! Reminding the world what love looks like, KimYe broke records with a photo of their first kiss as newlyweds.

  1.  The most-recreated picture

Another spot claimed by the Kardashian-Jenner clan. The world’s highest-paid model of 2018 Kendall Jenner, as reported by Forbes, posted an image that inspired Instagrammers worldwide. The picture shows Jenner lying down with her hair delicately arranged in the shape of seven hearts.

  1. The picture that started controversy

Posted by @genderless_nipple account it aimed to expose the double standards on Instagram when it comes to female nudity. The social network has continuously censored breasts by removing nude pictures of women while images of topless men remain online.



5.The most-liked picture

This one started with the caption, “Let’s set the world record together and get most liked picture on Instagram,” and the rest was history. It beat the previous record held by Kylie Jenner, and still remains the most-liked on Instagram at over 53 million likes.

6.The picture with the most comments

More than five million people have left messages on the only post on US rapper XXXTentacion’s Instagram account to mourn and remember him. The rapper was fatally shot during a robbery in 2018 and comments continue to pour in.

7.The most-followed South African Instagram account

South African cricket player AB de Villiers claims the top spot in SA. He beat the likes of DJ Zinhle, Bonang Matheba and Trevor Noah. According to Good Housekeeping, de Villiers is a local and international favourite.
