An American woman was killed in an explosion when a gender reveal party took a tragic turn.

The 56-year-old woman, whose name has been withheld, was attending the event at a home in Knoxville in the US when an explosion occurred during the gender announcement on Saturday 26 October, NBC News reports.

The woman was hit by flying debris from the explosion, which had apparently been part of the gender reveal. She was declared dead on the scene.

“The investigation determined that a gender reveal announcement resulted in the explosion, which caused debris to strike the victim,” the sheriff’s statement said.

The Marion County Sheriff’s office is investigating the incident, ABC News reports.

This is not the first time and the incident has occurred at a gender reveal party. In 2017, another party caused a wildfire which burnt down vast tract of land in Arizona and caused $8 million (around R116 million) in damage, according to CNN.
