High school students use their matric ball funds to feed the needy

Learners give back during lockdown.

The Grade 11 class at Rondebosch Boys’ High School have opened their hearts and have decided to give back by feeding those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

Before lockdown was implemented, the school’s matric class of 2021 had raised R11 000 for their matric dance next year.

The funds were to be kept in a kitty, but the pandemic prompted one of the learners to reach out to those in need and make a difference.

Cameron de Kock, one of the grade 11 learners at the school, was introduced to Howard’s Soup Kitchen by Oliver Slingers, an educator at the school.

Howard’s Soup Kitchen is a family-run community support initiative that offers warm meals to those in disadvantaged communities.

Young Cameron was inspired by the initiative and decided to offer support to the community.

He and the rest of the class of 2021 unanimously agreed to help those in need and donated the funds raised for their matric ball, to Howard’s Soup Kitchen.

The group has also collected non-perishable food items which they packaged into food parcels for the people living in Die Gatjie informal settlement. The learners hope that their deed inspires others to donate or contribute to those in need.

“It’s completely been a pupil-driven endeavour – from planning to implementation,” Shaun Simpson, headmaster of Rondebosch Boys High School, tells YOU.

“This is what makes it especially gratifying – that these young men have developed a social conscience and feel empowered to make a difference and to be active citizens. 

“One of the arms of school activity is civic responsibility and engagement. It’s one thing to have structures in the school to speak to what it means to be socially aware but it’s exactly the outcome you want when students take ownership and implement social responsibility in the community beyond the school,” the principal said.

It seems the future looks quite bright with such empathetic boys leading the way forward.
