A man was accidentally shot dead by his father-in-law after travelling more than 7 000km to see him for a surprise visit.

Christopher Bergan (37) flew from Norway to Florida in the US to surprise his father-in-law, Richard Dennis, for his 61st birthday, PEOPLE reports.

The pensioner was so startled when Christopher jumped out of some bushes in his backyard that he shot and killed his son-in-law, thinking it was an intruder, ABC news reports.

According to police, Richard had heard banging on the back door that evening and decided to turn on the porch light when Christopher leaped out from the bushes to surprise him, scaring the old man.

As soon as he realised what had happened, the 61-year-old called emergency services and attempted first aid to stop the bleeding, Daily Star reports.

No charges are set to be brought against Dennis.

"Our investigation has revealed that this was totally accidental. It was a really sad occurrence, and no charges are warranted in this case,” Sheriff Bob Johnson said.

"Anybody who is religious out there, you need to pray for this family," he added.

"I can't imagine what they're going through . . . it's horrible."
