A woman and two children have died and 30 people hospitalised after fumigation was carried out at an apartment block.

The flats in the city of Timisoara in western Romania had recently undergone fumigation, which is now being linked to the deaths and hospitalisation of the residents.

The dead were a 29-year-old woman, her three-year-old child and a 10-day-old infant.

After the fumigation on 16 November ambulances were called to the complex on several occasions but no major health hazard was detected.

The fumigation on the fourth floor of the property was carried out by Bistim SRL, a local company.

According to Dorel Sandesc, the head of anaesthesia and intensive care at Timisoara County Hospital, the three deceased were of very low body weight which meant the toxins were more concentrated in their smaller bodies.

He added that while the fumigation was suspected to have caused residents’ ill-health, it was still not confirmed which toxin resulted in the deaths.

“I don’t want to speculate, but it was certainly something very strong. We have already contacted experts in Berlin,” he said.

“They’re specialists at the centre dealing with toxin incidents. They also confirmed that the toxins attacked the dead on a cellular level.”

The company has been ordered to provide information on the chemicals that were used, and these are being examined by experts.
