A heroic nine-year-old gained 18kg so he could donate bone marrow to save his dad’s life.
Lu Zikuan, from China, wanted to help his father, Lu Yanheng, who’d been battling cancer for years, The Star reports.
After hiding his illness from his children for years, Lu finally told them about it and admitted he was in desperate need of a spinal bone marrow transplant, Mirror UK reports.
All three of Lu’s children wanted to donate their bone marrow but it was his eldest son, Lu Zikuan, who turned out to be a match.
The nine-year-old was told he needed to gain at least 15kg before he’d be allowed to undergo the gruelling operation to save his dad’s life.
For months, the selfless youngster ate five meals a day. Even though the family isn’t well off, the little boy was given the most nutritious food they could afford in order to help him gain weight.
Lu Zikuan finally reached his goal and the transplant took place on 9 September – just in time for his dad’s birthday.
His father expressed his gratitude for the successful operation on social media.
“This is a day I will never forget — my son gave me the hope to live on my birthday. I thank my son for everything he’s done for me,” he wrote.
Lu Zikuan is out of hospital and on an eating plan. He said he hopes to get back to about 30kg.
