Jailbird took on a new meaning when Dutch police arrested the feathered creature in connection with a robbery last week.

According to Utrecht police in the Netherlands, they locked the pet bird behind bars after its owner was arrested for shoplifting, as the bird had been sitting on the man’s shoulder at the time of the incident.

“As we don 't have a birdcage, this bird had no other place to stay than in the cell. His owner agreed to this,” the police posted on their Instagram page.

“When the owner was released shortly after, the bird accompanied him.

“The bird hasn’t been questioned and is as far as we know not guilty of any charges,” the police added.

But people weren’t impressed with the cops who gave the bird water and bread to nibble on while it was in the holding cells.

“Next time give it fruit and seeds, NOT BREAD! Please,” Chilinista Marlene protested.

“Please just no bread? It’s really bad for birds,” another Instagram user said.

The Irish Independent reported that during the confinement, cops “were shocked to find out that we aren’t in possession of a bird cell or cage”.

“Officers said that although the station didn’t have a cage for the bird, it was being ‘well cared for’,” the publication stated.
