International tennis star Roger Federer has officially touched down in Cape Town ahead of his charity tennis match, The Match in Africa.
Hosted by the Roger Federer Foundation and in its 6th year, this charity match is the first one to be played in Africa, Channel24 reports. Previous matches, called Match for Africa, were played in Switzerland and the US.
Local celebrities gathered to welcome the 20-time Grand Slam champion to the Mother City and among the crowd was rugby player Schalk Burger who challenged Roger to a friendly match.
The Saracens player’s wife, Michele, took to Instagram to share a clip of the moment.
“Who won that point?! Such a humble hero,” she captioned the clip in which Roger, who’s dressed in a powder blue shirt, can be seen battling it out on court with Schalk.
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi also had the pleasure of meeting the tennis player and shared a heart-warming post to his Instagram page welcoming him.
“What a pleasure @rogerfederer, a true sporting icon. Your words continue to inspire me and have been an important part of my journey. It was an honour to welcome you to Cape Town,” Siya captioned the post.
The star-studded event, which is set to take place today, Friday 7 February, at Cape Town Stadium, will see local comedian Trevor Noah and renowned US business mogul and philanthropist Bill Gates take to the courts in a doubles game alongside Rafael Nadal.
