Meet the top Toyota challenger

It was a battle of  epic proportions (both mental and physical) that brought the top contestants together in Knysna on the weekend of 21 October 2019.

The Toyota Fortuner 4x4 Challenge encouraged aspiring gladiators to flaunt their fitness for a chance to win a shiny new ride and a host of awesome prizes. Throw in four  South African sporting personalities to spice things up and we knew we were in for a heroic two-day battle.

The top four selected contestants (obtained through media partners Highbury Media, Media24, Independent Media and Tiso Blackstar) were paired with heroes that included South African Dakar legend Giniel de Villiers, Cheetahs rugby player Oupa Mohoje, fitness expert and powerhouse Nkateko “Takkies” Dinwiddy and Springbok rower Kirsten McCann.

The event marked the fourth instalment of the competition, with Garmin, Specialized and returning sponsor Salomon providing the necessary gear.

All kitted out and ready for action, contestants battled it out come rain or shine – the weather turned out to be another obstacle they had to overcome.

From beach sprinting and paddling in the cold Knysna lagoon, to answering brainteasers and biking, they did it all. Ultimately, there could only be one winner and Cape Town-based Trevor Lagerwey (who entered via Men’s Health magazine and was teamed up with Olympic rower Kirsten McCann) took the title and the keys to the brand-new Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD-6 4x4 6AT. Not too shabby!

The three runners-up did not leave empty handed though, as all the contestants received a Specialized Epic Comp mountain bike and cycling gear, Garmin Fenix 6 Plus smartwatch and Salomon apparel to the value of more than R60 000.

Think you have what it takes to participate next year? You’ll be good to go if you start practising yesterday.
