Who is Thuma Mina Teaching?

Thuma Mina Teaching (TMT) is a registered non-profit organisation with a mission to create quality educational materials that are accessible to all learners, especially those in disadvantaged communities. South Africa’s basic education system is riddled with poor outcomes and struggles with a high rate of attrition and inadequate resources.

The crisis is evident in that only 6 out of 100 learners who start Grade 1 go on to qualify for undergraduate studies. The deep disparities in the education system have been exacerbated by the pandemic, the full impact is estimated to be felt until 2031, according to a recent study (Gustafsson 2021).

TMT has heeded the call for collective action, recognising the potential of unified social impact. TMT achieves their goals by creating captivating and engaging video lessons centred around the national school curriculum. They have a “one-click-access” approach to accelerate accessibility. The most-used platforms are YouTube and Facebook, but their lessons are also aired on national television and are available on their website. All the lessons are completely free to the learner.

These video lessons are dynamic and short, ensuring maximum retention. The programmes aim to strengthen learner engagement in the senior phase, i.e. grades 7-9, aiming to reduce dropout rates. The video lessons are coupled with presentation slides, self-marking assessments and gamified learning. Through a single click, learners access a repository of resources.

In short, TMT serves as a handy, versatile resource. The resource strengthens aftercare centres, it functions as a “co-teacher” within the classroom and serves as a self-directing learning tool for learners at home.

How does TMT impact society?

  • Their resources serve as a self-directed learning tool for learners.
  • It improves teacher content knowledge and exposes teachers to innovating teaching techniques.
  • Schools use the resource as a tool in the classroom.
  • They make the resources available to aftercare centres to enrich their programmes.
