Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, has done it for years – reworking some of her favourite outfits for official engagements – but nowhere was this more apt than at husband Prince William’s inaugural Earthshot Prize awards ceremony in London this week.
In keeping with the night’s theme, which asked guests not to buy new outfits, the 39-year-old wore a lilac gown by her favourite fashion brand, Alexander McQueen.
Royal fans might’ve recognised the stunning dress, which Kate also wore a decade earlier in Los Angeles.
The mom of three drew much praise, with most agreeing it was the perfect look for the environmental awards, which honoured five winners who each receive £1 million (R20m) from the couple’s Royal Foundation to put into action their ideas to help save the planet.

Grecian lavender gown
Kate wowed in this Grecian-inspired lilac gown at the Earthshot Awards in London this week. But she first wore it in 2011 when she and William (39) attended a Bafta gala event in Los Angeles.
Chic white coat-dress
Kate first wowed in this chic off-white coat dress by Alexander McQueen to daughter Princess Charlotte’s christening in July 2015, before bringing it out again the following year for the annual Trooping the Colour at Buckingham Palace. Clearly a firm favourite she also wore it to the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018.
Sparkly blue gown
The duchess dazzled in this glittering azure dress by Jenny Packham during the Cambridges’ tour of India in 2016. She wore it again last year while hosting a gala for the charity Place2Be in the UK.
Teal evening gown
One of her favourites – she wore it to a gala event in New York to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the University of St Andrews (where she and William met as students) in 2014, and to a dinner at the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2014 for her charity The Art Room.
Slinky minidress
She chose this elegant grey Roksanda Ilincic day dress for a reception in Los Angeles in 2011 and then brought it out again in 2016 for a lunch in London in aid of the Anna Freud Centre.
