They were once a tight twosome who bonded over fashion, fitness and female empowerment.
But Meghan Markle and Jessica Mulroney’s friendship is hanging by the barest of threads now – although it seems Jessica is doing her best to claw her way back into the duchess’ favour.
The Canadian stylist recently uploaded a throwback picture of her son Brian (10) carrying Meghan's veil at her wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018.
“When I feel dark and grey, I see this and it all goes away," Jessica initially captioned the post.
She later changed it to: "I see this and pure joy”.
But not long after she deleted the snap, reportedly on orders from “someone from Team Sussex”, an insider says.
Meghan, it seems, wants little more to do with her former bestie, and Jessica is taking it hard.
The two women were once very close. Meghan and Harry spent a lot of their time at Jessica and husband Ben’s home in Canada in the early days of their relationship, reportedly hiding out in their house when news first broke of their romance, Mail Online says.
According to Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, the authors of Finding Freedom, it was here Meghan “fell hard” for Harry after getting a glimpse of what he would be like as a dad.
All was well in BFF world until that social
media drama when Jessica was accused by a black social media influencer of
abusing her white privilege.
Sasha Exeter, a former athlete who now runs fashion and lifestyle site SoSasha, called out Jessica for her “very problematic behaviour and antics” within the fashion community.
She also accused Jessica of taking offence to Sasha’s call for bloggers and social media stars to speak out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, US Weekly reports.
Jessica later apologised but used her friendship with Meghan as an argument: “As I told you privately, I have lived a very public and personal experience with my closest friend where race was front and centre.”
She added that her friendship with Meghan was “deeply educational”.
“I learned a lot from that. I promise to continue to learn and listen on how I can use my privilege to elevate and support black voices.”
A source told US Weekly the Duchess of Sussex wasn’t pleased that Jessica involved her in her drama.
“Meghan couldn’t get over that Jessica brought up her relationship with Meghan,” the insider said at the time.
“That was hugely offensive to Meghan and the deciding factor for her. Meghan considers the relationship to be done.”
“Meghan said friends reflect friends and because of what's at stake she can no longer be associated with Jessica,” a close friend of Meghan told Mail Online.
“At least not in public.”
It’s unclear where the women stand right now. But if the deleted Instagram snap is anything to go by, their friendship is a sinking ship.
