The Cambridge family’s Christmas card has just arrived and it’s a departure from previous family cards – literally.
Whereas most past festive family snaps have been shot at their Norfolk country home, Anmer Hall, this year Prince William, Kate, George, Charlotte and Louis chose the sandy landscapes of Jordan as a backdrop for their festive greeting.
For the shot they seem to be posing in a desert setting with William, George (8) and Louis (3) all in cool and comfortable shorts while Kate and Charlotte (6) opted for flowing dresses.
“Delighted to share a new image of the family,” they wrote in an Instagram post in which they showcased the picture, taken while on a secret trip to the Middle Eastern country this year.
Although William's dad, Prince Charles, made an official trip to Jordan last month, nothing was known of the Cambridges' visit until their Christmas card was recently sent out.
In response to queries from the media, Kensington Palace said the photo was taken earlier this year but did not reveal what the nature of the trip was or exactly when it took place. It's thought that it was probably a private family holiday.
This isn't the first time William and Kate have spent time in Jordan. William has visited before in his capacity as a working royal, while Kate lived in the country for two years as a child while her father, Michael Middleton, worked for British Airways as a flight dispatcher.
We take a look at other royal Christmas cards over the years.
2020
The family chose a rustic theme to ring in the festive season. Dressed in jerseys and jeans, the Cambridges looked snug in their winter wear.
2018
They kept it casual for this family portrait, posing in a tree at their home at Anmer Hall.
2017
Back when they were just a family of four! The royal family’s 2017 holiday card, taken by photographer Chris Jackson, was the total opposite of their 2018 choice. William, Kate, George and Charlotte were formal in hues of blue.
2015
For their first Christmas after welcoming Charlotte, the Cambridges opted for a playful portrait taken among autumn leaves at Kensington Palace.
