It’s one of the most special events on the Monaco calendar and by the looks of things one that Princess Charlene of Monaco’s twins, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, revel in.
The seven-year-old twins were spotted with their father, Prince Albert (63), at the traditional boat burning ceremony to mark the country's annual Sainte-Dévote day yesterday.
The youngsters, who were bundled up against the cold in thick coats, were also joined by their aunt Princess Caroline (65) and their cousins Louis Ducruet (29) and Camille Gottlieb (23), the children of Princess Stephanie.
Sainte-Dévote is the patron saint of the principality and each year on the eve of the feast day of Sainte Dévote, a symbolic fishing boat is set on fire.
The national holiday fell just a day after the twins' mother’s 44th birthday, but this year the former South African Olympic swimmer wasn't able to be with her family as usual.
Instead she remains in a clinic outside of the country receiving medical treatment after suffering a physical and emotional breakdown late last year.
Yet by all accounts she’s getting better by the day and a statement released by the palace said she was “with all Monegasques and residents in spirit for these Sainte-Devote celebrations. As soon as Her health allows, the Princess will be very happy to enjoy these shared moments with them once again.”
It also said she's “currently progressing satisfactorily and very encouraging” and that her "recovery and follow up dental care are expected to take several more weeks".
The princess was laid low in SA for most of last year after suffering complications arising from a severe ear, nose and throat infection following sinus and dental work.
She did mark her birthday by posting a slideshow of photos that included candid snaps of her husband and children on Instagram from her foundation's profile.
“Happy birthday, Princess Charlene,” the post read. “We honour you for how much you always give of yourself to change people’s lives around the world, your passion and dedication to saving and changing lives is truly an inspiration.
“We trust this video of your journey thus far reminds you just how loved and appreciated you are.”
