They were once as thick as thieves, besties in every sense of the word – but these days Jessica Mulroney seems to be persona non grata in Meghan Markle’s book.
Sources say the 40-year-old Canadian socialite and stylist has been desperately trying to reach out to her friend in a bid to make things right after she was embroiled in an online racial spat.
But all her attempts have reportedly been met with a stony silence. “Jessica has been calling Meghan non-stop and also calling up mutual friends to try to patch up their friendship,” an insider says. “She’s devastated. Meghan seems to have turned her back on her.”
It’s a complicated situation, though. Last month Jessica made headlines for all the wrong reasons after a social media row with black Instagram influencer Sasha Exeter.
Sarah claimed the mother-of-three sent her a string of abusive messages and threatened to ruin her career after taking offence at one of her posts, in which she called on people with large social media followings to speak out about Black Lives Matter.
She says Jessica, who is married to the son of Canada’s former prime minister, Brian Mulroney, tried to use her “textbook white privilege” and wealth to intimidate her.
The spat led to the cancellation of Jessica’s wedding-themed reality show, I Do Redo, as well as the loss of her fashion slot on popular TV show Good Morning America. Her husband, Ben Mulroney (44), was also forced to cancel his hosting gig on CTV entertainment show Etalk.
In a statement on Twitter, Jessica said she respected the network’s decision and had decided to step back from her professional life for a while. “The events that have transpired over the last few days have made it clear I have more work to do,” she wrote.
“I realise more than ever how being a white, privileged woman has put me far ahead of so many, and in particular those in the black community. And while I can’t change the past, I can do my part to do better in the future.”
But it seems the damage has already been done. Meghan (38) is a passionate advocate for gender and race equality and being associated with someone outed for being insensitive would go against her principles – no matter how close they once have been. Jessica was instrumental in planning Meghan and Harry’s wedding and three of her four kids were members of the bridal party.
Also, if reports are to be believed, Jessica and Meghan’s friendship has been on the out for a while. “Meghan started to get the feeling Jessica was benefitting from her status,” a source says.
“The row has really given Meghan the excuse she was waiting for to cut Jess off for good,” another source adds.
Jessica’s hubby, however, has slammed the reports that the two women have fallen out. He has also denied rumours his wife is set to write a tell-all book about Meghan.
Reposting a news article on his Twitter account citing the fall-out and that Jessica was calling Meghan “non-stop”, he wrote simply “FALSE”.
