When you’re injured, the body works hard to mend the affected area. A layer of cells and collagen forms over the damaged area to form scar tissue. And although scars are mostly harmless, they can be unsightly and unwanted. Scars can be painful, itchy, disfiguring and even disabling. The appearance of scars can also cause emotional and psychological distress. There are different types of scars and different ways of treating them. With most treatments, scars can be decreased in size and visibility. Many treated scars become dramatically less visible over time so it’s worth tackling them.
Burns, insect bites, cuts, accidents, acne, tattoos and surgery can all induce keloids, which are scars where the skin is raised and thickened. They can grow to be much larger than the original injury and are more common on darker skin. This reddish-brown scar tissue can appear on the skin or in other tissues.
