New app becomes world’s first 'virtual cemetery'

accreditation

Created out of the “need to stay close to the people who are no longer in our lives,” participants come together to reminisce on the life and memory of a loved one or pet. The multi-platform social network will allow participants to share their feelings, photos of loved ones or leave gifts in their memory.

Participants can also create a virtual memorial where friends and family can visit. Here, visitors are able to post a photo, give a flower or gift. Special notifications will keep users updated when somebody visits the memorial. The app’s geo-location feature allows visitors to pin-point the exact location of the site where they can visit anytime. All this will be done in an environment that is safe and private.

'It is a private outlet to help participants find peace and move forward'

"It is a private outlet to help participants find peace and move forward, celebrating a life in a caring space," says Jacopo Vitali, one of the founders of the app.

The social network was created after Vitali’s personal experience. Distraught after the death of his young cousin, he recognised the need for an online platform to share his grief. This led to the birth of RipCemetery. Launched by Indiegogo, a crowdfunding site, the founders hope the app will help users keep the memory of their loved ones alive forever.

“RipCemetery goes beyond online obituaries to be more interactive, more responsive and a social gathering point for all who want to remember a love one.”

Importantly, the app has been described as simple and user-friendly. All users have to do is enter their loved one’s name, date of birth and date of death. It is available on multiple platforms, including Apple iOS, Android, Windows Mobile and any desktop computer.
