Olivia Munn: I sat at the geek table

accreditation

Olivia Munn sat with “the geeks” in high school. The 34-year-old actress started her career hosting G4’s tech savvy series Attack of the Show!, before moving on to star as an economist on HBO’s The Newsroom. And she’s explained that when she moved schools a lot as a child, this was one social group she was always accepted by.

'The people who always had a place for me to sit at lunch were the geeks'

"I moved around a lot as a kid and I was always the new girl,” she told Us Weekly. “The people who always had a place for me to sit at lunch were the geeks.”

Olivia went on to break down the term “geek”, explaining how the concept has evolved over the years. Although it used to be the “jocks” who were stereotypically in charge of operations, she feels there’s been a switch.

"The interesting thing about the term ‘geek’ is that before it used to mean social anxiety on the outside, but geeks run the world right now," the star mused.

She also opened up about what inspired her to launch a career in entertainment. As it turns out, a popular 1980s sitcom character is responsible for Olivia’s current stardom.

"I've always wanted to be an actress since I was a little girl, since I was watching Punky Brewster,” the brunette beauty explained. "When I found out she was an actress, that's what I wanted to do."

Having grown up in Oklahoma, Olivia didn’t know much about the industry. But she put her fears aside and moved herself across the country to figure out Hollywood.

"I packed up and drove myself out from Oklahoma to California. I had one book — it was called An Actor's Guide to Moving to Hollywood," Olivia recalled.

She’s now got a solid career, and is dating Green Bay Packers football player Aaron Rodgers. But she is eager to keep adding to her life experiences by becoming a writer.

"I wanted to write a collection of short stories about my life. I wrote it in a way that if my 13-year-old self could write a letter to me now, and I correspond back to her," she said of her endeavours.
