A bride-to-be from St Andrews in Scotland shocked guests when she turned her 30th birthday party into a surprise wedding.

Samantha Allen and her fiancé, James, made the spontaneous decision in order to ensure a “no-fuss” wedding surrounded by their closest friends and family.

According to Metro UK, the couple married in a legal ceremony the day before but kept it a secret. Only a few of Samantha’s closest friends and family were let in on the big secret while most of her guests thought they’d just be celebrating her birthday.

“It all went perfectly on the day. I couldn’t have asked for a better wedding day and all for about £1 500 (about R28 500),” she said.

“This was exactly how I wanted it. No fuss, no hassle and simple. I married the man I want to spend the rest of my life with, with my closest family there to witness, and had the most amazing day, both days. I even got to wear my dress twice.”

During the celebration, Samantha’s mother announced to astonished guests that the real reason they’d assembled was in order to celebrate the newlyweds, Yahoo Lifestyle reports.

“The reaction from the guests was amazing. They all thought it was the most amazing surprise and no one had any idea that it was about to unfold. They said it would be a hard surprise to top.”

The couple, who got engaged in August last year, had been together for seven years but weren’t planning to get married anytime soon. However, after losing a baby in March last year, the pair decided they wanted to have something to look forward to and came up with the idea of having a surprise wedding.

“I don’t like to be the centre of attention and usually like to fade into the background at big events,” Samantha explained.

“My 30th, though, was a huge deal and I didn’t want it to go past as just another day so I had decided on a party for that.”

“I never really considered a huge white wedding because it’s just not who I am.”

For Samantha, the double celebration was the perfect way to mark two major milestones without spending a fortune.
