Pizza and the pandemic nearly stopped her from taking the role that would cement her status as the kooky queen of Hollywood. Lockdown was in full swing and Jennifer Coolidge was in a bad place, reading grim stories of death and disease and convinced the world was coming to an end.

There was a stack of pizzas in the freezer and she was steadily working her way through them. So, when the phone call came offering her a role in a show about a bunch of rich people who go on holiday to a resort hotel, she thought “no way”.

“I’d been gorging and self-destructing at home for months, eating pizza all day, sometimes five or six a day,” Jennifer says. “I tried to get out of it because I was too fat. I’d picked up 30 or 40 pounds [13kg to 18kg].” But director Mike White wasn’t taking no for an answer. “Are you afraid?” he texted her at 2am.
