It’s been an eight-year wait, but Cameron Diaz is ready for her next act.

The 49-year-old is set to come out of retirement to star in a new Netflix comedy with Jamie Foxx, aptly titled Back in Action.

Jamie, who starred alongside Cam in the 2014 remake of Annie, in which she played Miss Hannigan – the last film she made before stepping away from the spotlight  teased fans with the comeback news by releasing an audio clip on Twitter.

“I feel excited but I don’t know how to do this, you know?” Cameron says to Jamie in the phone conversation. Hoping to twist her arm to join him on-screen, the Ray Charles actor called in some help from NFL star Tom Brady who once retired from football for about a month but decided to get back into the game.

“I was talking to Jamie and he said you need a few tips on how to un-retire,” Tom says to Cameron in the clip of their three-way call. “I’m relatively successful at un-retiring.”

There was always something about her. During the ’90s and 2000s Cameron was known as the queen of rom-coms and quintessential girl next door.

A four-time Golden Globe nominee, she won fans over with roles in The Sweetest Thing, There’s Something About Mary, The Holiday and Charlie’s Angels. But after filming Annie she decided it was time to take a break from Hollywood.

“I just really wanted to make my life manageable by me,” she later shared. The star also revealed to Gwyneth Paltrow, who also stepped away from acting to focus on her Goop brand, that she’d grown tired of being “infantilised” in the industry and how the decision brought “a peace in my soul”.

During her time away from the spotlight, Cameron chose to spend time following other passions. She became the author of The Longevity Book: The Science of Aging, The Biology of Strength, and the Privilege of Time and also helped co-create Avaline, a wine made with organic grapes.

She also focused on her family. The Shrek star married Good Charlotte musician Benji Madden in 2015 and in 2019 the couple welcomed their first child, Raddix.

“I wouldn’t have been the mom that I am now had I chosen to do that at any other time in my life,” the actress said in an interview. “I feel for so many mothers who can't, that have to go to work, whatever they’re doing. I feel so much for them and for their children and for all of that, but it does really take a village.”

Last year she spoke to comedian Kevin Hart on his talk show, Hart to Heart, about her choice and “management of me as a human being”.

“When you do something at a really high level for a long period of time, when you’re the person that’s sort of delivering on this one thing, everything around, all parts of you that isn’t that, has to sort of be handed off to other people,” she said. “But for my personal, spiritual self, I was realising that one part of me that functioned at a high level wasn’t enough.”
