For many, the first month of a new year marks a time to refocus, re-align and reflect, and Justin Bieber has done just that.

The singer shared an emotional post with his 160 million Instagram followers as he looked back on a dreadful day back in January 2014.

“7 years ago today I was arrested, not my finest hour. Not proud of where I was at in my life,” he captioned a picture of himself in handcuffs.  The Biebs then shared some wise words. “All this to say God has brought me a long way. From then til now I do realize something. God was as close to me then as he is right now.

“My encouragement to you is to let your past be a reminder of how far God has brought you. Don’t allow shame to ruin your “today”.”

The 26-year-old Yummy singer was at his lowest ebb in 2014 as he made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

He was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence, drag racing and driving without a valid licence in Miami. All this at the age of just 19. But he believes it’s his faith that got him through the bad times, where he says he was “hurting, unhappy, confused, angry, mislead, misunderstood and angry at God”.

In the years that followed, controversy continued to dog him and he had a bit of breakdown after a publicity tour for his album Purpose.

In the YouTube documentary Justin Bieber: Seasons, which released in 2020, the star openly spoke about some of the darkest times in his life, his struggles with mental health and his battle with addiction.

But he’s a different person now – and he has his loved ones and especially his wife, Hailey Bieber, to thank along with God.

“Let the forgiveness of Jesus take over and watch your life blossom into all that God has designed you to be. LOVE YOU GUYS WITH MY WHOLE HEART,”
