Canadian pop star Justin Bieber has revealed that he "hit a little bit of an emotional breakdown" at the start of his marriage to American model Hailey Bieber.

Looking back, the Intentions singer says he believed that marriage would solve all his problems but what it actually did was just amplify them.

“You want your wife to do something that you're not doing and it's like, it's hard sometimes to look in the mirror and really have to realise, man, maybe you're not the person you necessarily thought you were," the Grammy winner told Apple Music in a recent interview.

Justin (28) adds that the marriage has brought about maturity and personal accountability.

He and Hailey Baldwin (25) had already known each other for almost a decade when they tied the knot at a New York court in 2018 followed by a traditional wedding in South Carolina a year later.

But their marriage got off to a bumpy start, with both stars subsequently admitting that it forced them to confront their demons.

Launched headfirst into stardom at a young age, Justin went off the rails in early adulthood and was arrested various times for drunk driving and assault.

In a 2019 Instagram post he opened up about the toll that being in the spotlight had had on his mental health.

“I went from a 13-year-old boy from a small town to being praised left and right by the world, with millions saying how much they loved me and how great I was," he says.

“I made every bad decision you could've thought of and went from one of the most loved and adored people in the world to the most ridiculed, judged and hated person in the world."

In a recent interview, Hailey admitted that she sometimes wondered if she'd made a big mistake.

She revealed that at one point in 2021 she broke down and called her mother, Kennya.

“I remember I called her a few different times. One particular time when we were in Brooklyn [New York] and I was calling her. I was crying, and I was like, ‘I just can't do it. There's no way I'm going to be able to do this if it's going to be like this forever.'

"And I just remember she was so calm on the phone and she was like, 'It's going to pass, and you're going to be fine'." Kennya (54) and Hailey's dad, actor Stephen Baldwin (55), have been married for 32 years.

But Hailey says no matter how tough things have sometimes been, she and Justin are both in the marriage for the long haul.

"Neither of us were going to be the person to say, ‘I quit,’” Hailey says. “Neither of us were going to be the one to walk away from the situation. Because we were just both like, ‘Hey, we chose to fight for this, so we’re gonna keep fighting past whatever we need to'.”

Now, in their fourth year of marriage, Justin says that although it's sometimes hard to try to see things from his wife's point of view, his life is immeasurably richer than it was when he was single.

“My home life was unstable. Like, my home life wasn't existing. I didn’t have a significant other. I didn’t have someone to love. I didn’t have someone to pour into but now I have that."
