R Kelly has had a taste of jailhouse justice.
The disgraced singer was assaulted by his cellmate at the at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in Chicago, his lawyers have said.
“Kelly was in his cell on his bed when another inmate came in and started to punch him,” said attorney Doug Anton. “The assault was stopped almost immediately, and Kelly didn’t sustain any injuries.”
The inmate was reportedly furious that he and other inmates have not been allowed visitors because Kelly’s fans have been protesting outside the jail.
“My understanding is, every time there is a pro-R Kelly protest outside of the jail, they lock down the entire facility,” said Kelly's lawyer Steven Greenberg.
The singer has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges including abuse of minors and sex trafficking. He has been in jail for more than a year as he awaits trials in several US states.
If he is convicted on all the charges, he will spend the
rest of his life in prison.
The cell attack is the latest episode in the disgraced musician’s downfall.
The FBI confirmed earlier this month that his manager, Donnell Russell, had phoned in the gun threat that interrupted the 2018 premiere of the documentary Surviving R Kelly, which lifted the lid on Kelly’s alleged crimes.
Russell (45) has been arrested on charges relating to a forced evacuation of a media screening of the explosive documentary in 2018 and has been charged with conspiracy and threatening physical harm by interstate communication.
Russell is one of three men recently arrested for threatening and bribing Kelly’s alleged sexual misconduct victims.
He threatened to release explicit photographs of one the star’s alleged victim if she did not withdraw her civil lawsuit against the singer. Russell allegedly sent cropped nude photographs of the woman, known only as Jane Doe, to her lawyer, along with a text saying, “the next two pictures have been cropped for the sake of not exposing her extremities to the world, yet!!!”
Richard Arline Jr (31), a long-time friend of the singer, reportedly offered a witness $500,000 not to cooperate with authorities, prosecutors said. Instead, the victim contacted law enforcement and continued to speak with Arline Jr under their supervision.
The third man, Michael Williams (37), a relative of a former publicist of Kelly’s, set fire to a vehicle parked outside the home of an alleged victim in Florida, according to prosecutors.
