Actor Kevin Bacon has given fans a glimpse into how he and wife Kyra Sedgwick keep the flame alive.
Kevin recently shared a cheeky pic on Instagramof a lacy thong he’d found while doing the laundry. The lacy lingerie features his initials in silver rhinestones.
“Sometimes doing laundry can be fun and full of surprises,” the Footloose actor captioned the post.
Kyra quickly replied, along with a winky face and red heart emoji, “Thanks for airing my dirty laundry.”
The couple have been married for 33 years and have two children, Travis (31) and Sosie (29).
Their marriage is impressive in a place like Hollywood,
where a couple’s divorce proceedings often lasts longer than the marriage did.
But Kevin and Kyra say there’s no secret to making it work and wish people would stop thinking there is.
“People say it’s this fairy-tale thing, but it’s life,” Kyra said in a 2012 interview.
“We just love each other a lot. When we’re on the red carpet and we get the, ‘How do you guys do it? No one can stay together,’ I get really irritated. I don’t think our relationship is more or less difficult; I just think you both make the commitment and you make it work.”
The 56-year-old actress believes that meeting the perfect partner is a matter of pure luck.
“Relationships are such a mystery,” she says. “Why do they work? Why do they not work? It’s just a total crapshoot. But that’s the ‘aha’ moment. Nobody has the answers.”
Kyra and Kevin (63) met in 1987 while they were both working on the movie Lemon Sky. For Kevin it was love at first sight, but Kyra needed a little convincing as she found him “really cocky”.
found her, you know, really very beautiful and sexy and aloof,” Kevin says. “I
was just immediately in love with her, and she was just immediately put off by
He spent weeks trying to get her to go on a date with him and when Kyra eventually agreed, it didn’t take long for her to fall in love too.
“I had no great role models in terms of healthy marriages, but I knew in my heart and soul that he was the right person,” she says. “It was an unquestionable truth of mine. I’ve never had anything like that before or after.”
Kyra admits her career took a backseat when she became a mother.
“I worked a lot less when the kids were younger,” she says. “I think you just make your priorities and sometimes they put restrictions on you that hurt a little bit and that’s okay.”
What made it easier was having a partner who acknowledged the sacrifices she was making, she adds.
“She’s made a lot more sacrifices than I’ve made,” Kevin told Glamour in a 2019 interview. “In many cases, because of the kids, she would make decisions career-wise that weren’t the best for her career.”
Which is why in 2005, when The Close came along, Kevin urged his wife to take the part. Kyra’s role as police detective Brenda Leigh Johnson in the drama series saw her win an Emmy for best lead actress in a drama series.
“When [it] came along – I don’t even look at this as a sacrifice – but the kids were still in high school or junior high and she had this opportunity to go out to California and to be a lead in a TV show,” Kevin recalls.
“I said, ‘Listen, I’ll stay with the kids.’ In this case, this was the first time in our lives I said, ‘I’ll stay home, I won’t take anything’.”
perfect as their marriage may seem, Kyra and Kevin have been candid about the
challenges they face. They once admitted to having a fight that lasted six
months. The family was living in a farmhouse in rural Connecticut, but Kyra
wanted to move because she “needed the pulse of the city”.
“My mental health was at stake,” she says.
They eventually moved to Manhattan in New York and got through those months “just by knowing that no one was going anywhere”.
But Kyra says she and Kevin don’t usually fight for long periods of time.
“We’re not one of those volatile, mercurial couples. We get cranky, but our fights usually don’t last very long and they’re rare.”
And even though more than three decades have passed, she sometimes still can’t believe her luck at landing Kevin.
“If someone had told me when I was 21 that I was going to be married and have a kid by 23, I would have told them they were out of their minds because I was very ambitious,” Kyra says.
“I was very independent. And then suddenly I met this person and it was like, well, this was it. We’re just really lucky, and it’s not hard.”
